The aim of the Department of Animal Science at the Tshwane University of Technology is to supply the animal production industry with highly skilled and qualified people who can deal with animal nutrition, breeding and the management of farm animals. Graduates of the department are highly sought after for their ability in applying principles of biological, physical, and social sciences to the problems associated with livestock production and management.
The department has an excellent record of training manpower for the different animal production industries for more than thirty years and is the only of its kind that has been offering training in equine management in South Africa for the past eighteen years.
Students can obtain different accredited qualifications from diploma up to doctorate level in both Animal Production and Equine Science.
The course in Animal Production aims to supply the animal production industry with qualified people who can deal with animal nutrition, breeding and the management of farm animals. These people will also be able to advise farmers in the use of animal remedies and feeds.
The objective of the course offered at TUT is to supply the equine industry with competent stud managers, commercial stable managers and recreational officers. Students are trained in all aspects of mare, foal and stallion management, stable management, sport and recreation. Candidates will acquire an understanding of anatomy and physiology, veterinary care, conformation analysis, behaviour, tack, farriery and nutritional requirements of horses amongst other topics.
