Welcome message from the Head of Department

Welcome to the Department of MSTE, a vibrant Department in terms of teaching, learning and research.  We are delighted that you have chosen the University and our Department to start, or continue, your higher education journey..  The Department is proud of academic excellence, effecting social change and development through research and high quality graduates.  The Department trains teachers from various parts of South Africa and other parts of Africa.  Research, teaching/learning and community engagement are the three pillars and lenses that the Department use as the framework to inform its activities.  We have a student population of 1700 studying in various undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.  The undergraduate programmes consist of BEd programmes namely Science (Mathematics, Physical Science and Life science), Technology (Civil, Electrical and Mechanical), Consumer Studies (Hospitality, Mathematical Literacy).  The post graduate programmes include Honours’, Master’s and Doctoral programmes in MSTE. The Department’s reputation for excellence is underpinned by its distinctive MSTE research that is partly led by OR Tambo Chair in Mathematics Education and through its distinguished and highly qualified academic staff comprising of Professors, Senior Lecturers, Lecturers and Technical staff.  As a way to ensure that our students meet the demands of the world of work they are also challenged to extend and enhance themselves intellectually, academically and professionally.  Currently the employability of our graduate is 96% in education sector.

Programmes offered within the Department have professional recognition through their emphasis on close working links with business, industry, and other professions. At the same time, however, they emphasize the importance of a solid base of general skills and knowledge through a carefully designed core curriculum that connects with changes taking place within education sector locally and globally as well as sensitive to the needs and requirements of sector and the labour market.  The Department aims at developing the professional skills that the student needs to deal with the various aspects related to teaching and learning in MSTE within a classroom context.  The focus is on helping the students acquire the experience, exposure and scientific knowledge to be competent in MSTE classroom based teaching.  The students also learn how to be aware of these fields and develop them in the light of the MSTE associations aiming at their promotion.  The department is also actively involved in the initiatives by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) in its effort to restructure the FET education sector.

We trust that through your taking advantage of everything the Department has to offer you- from attending lectures, to participating in student clubs and other community engagement programmes within the Department, to cultivating lasting relationships with students, staff and faculty- these will imprint some of the lasting memories on the great times spent with the Department.

On behalf of the Department, I welcome you to the MSTE family and wish you the absolute best in your educational and personal growth as you reposition yourself in contributing to agenda of MSTE research.
