Recognising that Research and Innovation (R&I) is the cornerstone of industrial and national development, the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment places R&I at the forefront of its operations. The Faculty continues to post enviable annual growth in research outputs and has occupied the number one position in the University in this domain for the past five years. This has been achieved through focussed interventions in targeted R&I areas, by encouraging staff and postgraduate students to engage in research topics, which are relevant to national and regional economic needs.

The research activities in the Faculty are grouped into, but not limited, to the following Niche Areas and Research Units:

  • Appropriate Architecture for South Africa
  • Telecommunications and Signal Processing
  • Control, Image Processing and Machine Intelligence
  • Climate Change, Water Security and Disaster Management
  • Advanced Catalysis Technologies
  • Energy and Industrial Power Systems
  • Mineral Beneficiation and Chemical Process Technologies
  • New Materials and Manufacturing Technology
  • Water and Wastewater Management

Most of the research in the Faculty is conducted in partnership with industry, local and international institutions, to ensure that the results remain relevant and find immediate application in the solution of real-life problems.
