What is personal counselling?

This is a support service offered by the Directorate if Student Development and Support (SDS) on all TUT campuses. The service is available to any TUT student who needs a space to talk about anything that is bothering them or causing concern or anxiety. In these personal counselling sessions students will be able to share their worries, fears, emotions and experiences in a safe and judgement free environment.  No problem is considered “too small” or “too big” for counselling!

It is also important to take note that the counselling is free and confidential but that it is only for registered TUT students.

Who does the counselling?

SDS employs trained professionals (Psychologists, Social Workers and Registered Counsellors) to do the counselling.

How does personal counselling work?

Students can come to the relevant SDS office or give SDS a call to make an appointment for a personal counselling session. The student then arrives at the scheduled time for the personal counselling session. The duration of a personal counselling session is 45 minutes to an hour and the counsellors usually see their client’s once a week. The length of the therapy can vary and is dependent on the nature of the situation and on the client and counsellor’s interaction.
